Distinguishes
Smith College Class of 2005
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Members of the
Smith College Class of 2005 will attend their first class as
registered students on Thursday, Sept. 6, following an on-campus
orientation from Sept. 1 through 5.
This year's incoming class of 672 first-year students and 73
transfers features one of the largest groups of international
women in recent years, representing 9 percent of enrollees and
coming to Smith from 39 countries outside the United States.
Within the United States, 46 U.S. states are represented by incoming
students. Several other facts and statistics, listed below, further
distinguish the Class of 2005:
- Seventy-seven incoming students will
be enrolled as Ada Comstock Scholars, women of nontraditional
undergraduate age;
- The incoming class will include 146
women of color, representing about 20 percent of new enrollees;
- Fifty-eight percent of first-year
students graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school
classes;
- Four new students will enter Smith
as Ford Scholars, each of whom will receive a full-tuition scholarship
for four years of study plus a laptop computer, all funded by
the Ford Motor Company to support engineering majors;
- Sixty-three of the incoming students
are descendents of former Smith students;
- This year's enrollees represent a
15 percent increase in students who applied through the college's
Early Decision program (students who identified Smith as their
first choice);
- The class is 37 students larger than
the college's target first-year enrollment;
- Among incoming first-year students,
38 have received the Smith College Book Award, presented each
year by Smith alumnae clubs around the world to high school students
who exemplify "the academic achievement, leadership qualities
and concern for others that characterize Smith College alumnae."
