Large International Group Distinguishes
Smith College Class of 2005

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Members of the Smith College Class of 2005 will attend their first class as registered students on Thursday, Sept. 6, following an on-campus orientation from Sept. 1 through 5.
This year's incoming class of 672 first-year students and 73 transfers features one of the largest groups of international women in recent years, representing 9 percent of enrollees and coming to Smith from 39 countries outside the United States. Within the United States, 46 U.S. states are represented by incoming students. Several other facts and statistics, listed below, further distinguish the Class of 2005:

  • Seventy-seven incoming students will be enrolled as Ada Comstock Scholars, women of nontraditional undergraduate age;
  • The incoming class will include 146 women of color, representing about 20 percent of new enrollees;
  • Fifty-eight percent of first-year students graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes;
  • Four new students will enter Smith as Ford Scholars, each of whom will receive a full-tuition scholarship for four years of study plus a laptop computer, all funded by the Ford Motor Company to support engineering majors;
  • Sixty-three of the incoming students are descendents of former Smith students;
  • This year's enrollees represent a 15 percent increase in students who applied through the college's Early Decision program (students who identified Smith as their first choice);
  • The class is 37 students larger than the college's target first-year enrollment;
  • Among incoming first-year students, 38 have received the Smith College Book Award, presented each year by Smith alumnae clubs around the world to high school students who exemplify "the academic achievement, leadership qualities and concern for others that characterize Smith College alumnae."
