Staff Picks: Favorite Photographs
from the Sophia Smith Collection
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-The staff of the
Sophia Smith Collection (SSC) have chosen more than 150 of their
favorite archival photos to display in an exhibit at the Alumnae
Gym at Smith College through August. Selected from among the
tens of thousands of photographs in the collection, the images
represent a range of themes and capture a wide variety of events
and topics.
Dating from as far back as the 1840s, the photos were taken to
commemorate public and private events, publicize activities,
document working conditions, and chronicle travels. They capture,
as only photographs can, the devilish gleam in the eyes of children,
life in distant places and times, beloved family members and
pets, spectacular costumes, appalling working and living conditions
and important events as well as everyday occurrences.
The exhibit- which is free, open to the public and wheelchair
accessible-is on view from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday; from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday; and from
1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday (except March 17).
The Sophia Smith Collection is an internationally recognized
repository of manuscripts, photographs, periodicals and other
primary sources in women's history. To learn more about the collection,
