New Racing Boat to be Christened During Celebration of Smith’s 2004 Silver-Medal Crew Team

Last May, following his wife’s 25th reunion at Smith College, Tad LaFountain donated $25,000 for a racing boat, called a shell, in honor of his wife. Elizabeth “Tica” Barrett Simpson, a 1979 graduate, had spent most of her non-academic time rowing as a member of the crew team during her time at Smith. During her reunion, she learned about the 2004 crew team’s success at the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III tournament in Sacramento, Calif., in which the team captured the silver medal. The champagne christening of the new shell will honor the silver-medal achievement of last year’s team. The shell is a Vespoli 8, designed to accommodate eight racers plus a coxswain. It will join the crew team’s fleet of six, eight-person boats and four, four-person boats.
“We are excited and honored to have such a generous donation to our increasingly competitive program,” said Vanessa Oddo, a member of the Class of 2005 and a crew team captain. ”Its very presence motivates us, and we are looking forward to making a bold statement in competitions this season with the amazing addition of the Tica.” |
The varsity crew team will row the new craft in the Seven Sisters Regatta at Mt. Holyoke College, Saturday, Oct. 30, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
