Longtime Smith Professor Recognized for Teaching, Scholarship

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Myron P. Glazer, the Barbara Richmond Professor in the Social Sciences, was recently awarded Smith College’s Honored Professor Award, bestowed annually to a faculty member for long and distinguished service to the college.

Glazer, who joined the Smith faculty in 1965, received the award from President Carol T. Christ at the May 15 commencement ceremony. At various times throughout the past 40 years, Glazer has served as chair of the department of sociology and co-director of the Jewish Studies Program. He is also a member of the graduate faculty at the University of Massachusetts and co-director of Smith’s Project on Women and Social Change.

Glazer has written extensively on the sociology of activism, environmental protest and ethics in research and business.

“A cherished colleague and mentor among faculty, an inspiration to his students and loyal to the college, Mickey Glazer has made an unforgettable impression at Smith and on all who are fortunate enough to come into contact with him,” said Christ.

His numerous awards and honors include a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship to support research on grassroots environmental activists in the United States, Israel and Czechoslovakia, and the Executive Council Award in recognition of honorable service and significant contribution to the Massachusetts Sociological Association.

With his wife, Penina, Glazer recently wrote “The Jews of Paradise: Creating a Vibrant Community in Northampton, Massachusetts.” The book combined Smith’s history with that of the larger local Jewish community in the 20th century and was commissioned by Northampton’s 350th Anniversary Celebration Committee. His next book, co-authored with six interdisciplinary colleagues and titled “Ordinary People: Extraordinary Courage and Hope,” is slated to be published in January 2006.

After earning his bachelor’s degree at the City College of New York, Glazer completed a master’s degree at Rutgers University and a doctorate at Princeton University.
