Smith College Students to Celebrate Mountain Day
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Smith College students will head for the hills today as the college celebrates Mountain Day, the annual fall break from classes that has been a Smith tradition for more than a century.
College bells in the Quadrangle, the Helen Hills Hills Chapel and College Hall sounded at 7:05, 7:15, 7:30 a.m. today to announce the holiday.
Classes and academic appointments are canceled until 7 p.m. so that students may put aside their books and enjoy the fall weather with picnics and hikes. Evening events, like films and lectures, will be held as scheduled.
Smith’s Mountain Day was first recorded in the 1877 diary of a student who spent the day hiking with friends on Mount Nonotuck. Today, many students will take a break from academic work and head to scenic spots such as Mount Tom, Skinner State Park and Shelburne Falls. Others may spend time in downtown Northampton, shopping and having coffee or lunch.
