Recognized for Her Contributions, Smith College Music Professor to Lecture
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Ruth A. Solie, the Sophia Smith Professor of Music, will deliver the 49th annual Katharine Asher Engel Lecture at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Weinstein Auditorium, Wright Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.
Solie’s lecture, “Railroads, Beethoven and Victorian Modernity,” will explore an 1883 magazine article published in London that compared the exhilaration of riding express trains to that of listening to Beethoven’s music. She will discuss Victorian attitudes toward Beethoven and attitudes toward more modern kinds of music.
The Engel lecture is granted annually to a Smith College faculty member who has made a significant contribution to his or her field.
A 1964 Smith graduate, Solie has been a member of the Smith music department faculty since 1974. She received her doctorate from the University of Chicago and has served on the music faculties at Yale and Columbia universities and Mary Baldwin College.
Within the discipline of historical musicology, Solie focuses on feminist scholarship, particularly in 19th-century Europe. Her current research surrounds girls and piano lessons. This year, Solie is also teaching such courses as “The Art of Listening” and “Analysis and Repertory.”
Solie has written and presented extensively about music history and women in music and is the author of “Music in Other Words; Victorian Conversations,” and editor of “Musicology and Difference, Gender and Sexuality in Music Scholarship.” She also wrote the afterward for the tome “Music & Women” by Sophie Drinker and conducted interviews with the author’s daughters, Cecilia Drinker Saltonstall and Ernesta Drinker Ballard, all of which are now archived in the Sophia Smith Collection.
A reception in the Smith College Club will follow the lecture.
