Smith Appoints Admissions
Director
Maureen Mahoney, dean of the college
at Smith College, has announced the appointment of Audrey Yale
Smith as director of admission.
A 19-year veteran of the college admissions
field, Smith is currently the director of admissions at Hampshire
College. During Smith's tenure, the number and quality of applicants
to Hampshire has increased steadily. Under Smith's direction,
Hampshire's admissions program has successfully incorporated
the involvement of students, faculty, alumni and trustees.
Before going to Hampshire, Smith served
as director of admissions and director of enrollment management
at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N. J.
In her new position, Smith will oversee
a staff of 20, providing institutional leadership in the development
and implementation of student recruitment strategies. Her responsibilities
will include developing annual and long-term admissions goals
and supporting the college's priorities of excellence and diversity
in its student body.
In announcing the appointment, Mahoney
cited Smith's considerable experience, understanding of financial
aid and retention issues and her experience in recruiting engineering
students to Stevens, where she also spearheaded a program designed
to support young women seeking engineering degrees. With a new
engineering program taking shape at the college, Mahoney noted,
Smith will play a crucial role in marketing the particular benefits
of studying engineering in a women-only setting.
Smith will assume her new post on August
1.
Smith College is consistently ranked
among the nation's best liberal arts colleges. Enrolling 2,800
students from every state and 50 other countries, Smith is the
largest undergraduate women's college in the United States.
