Promotions for Two at Smith
The Smith College Board of Trustees
voted recently to promote two members of the faculty.
John Davis, Priscilla Paine Van der
Poel associate professor of art history, was promoted to the
rank of professor. Davis has been a member of the Smith faculty
since 1992. He specializes in American art and architecture and
is the author of the award-winning book "The Landscape of
Belief: Encountering the Holy Land in Nineteenth-Century American
Art and Culture." Davis received the bachelor's degree from
Cornell University and the master's and doctoral degrees from
Columbia University.
Michelle Joffroy, instructor in the
department of Spanish and Portuguese, was promoted to the rank
of assistant professor. Joffroy specializes in 20th century Spanish-American
literature. She received the bachelor's degree from the University
of Massachusetts and the master's and doctoral degrees from the
University of Arizona. She has been affiliated with Smith since
1996, when she was awarded a Mendenhall Fellowship for study
towards the doctoral degree.
Both promotions take effect July 1.
