New England: Solid as a Rock?
Seismologist to Address Quake Risk
New Englanders don't often worry about
earthquakes--but perhaps they should.
"Earthquakes do occur on a regular
basis in New England," says Boston College geologist Alan
L. Kafka, an authority on seismology, earthquake hazards and
the science of "unexpected earthquakes."
Kafka will present "Where Will
the Next Large Earthquake Occur in the Eastern United States?"
at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 15, in McConnell Hall 103, Smith
College. His talk, part of the Five-College-University Geology
Lecture Series, is free, open to the public and wheelchair-accessible.
Kafka, who is associate professor of
geology and geophysics, is the author of numerous published studies.
They include analyses of earthquakes in the Quabbin Reservoir
area, among them the October 1994 earthquake in central Massachusetts.
