Alumni Award Presented to Rev. Richard P. Unsworth by Harvard
Divinity School
Harvard Divinity School presented Smith College's Rev. Richard
P. Unsworth-interim dean of the chapel, Protestant chaplain and
lecturer in religion-with its alumni honor, the Rabbi Martin
Katzenstein Award, on June 4, 1997.
Established in 1979 to honor the memory of Rabbi Martin Katzenstein,
who died in 1970 while the Divinity School's acting dean of students,
the award recognizes a Harvard Divinity School graduate who exhibits
"a passionate and helpful interest in the lives of other
people, an informed and realistic faithfulness, an embodiment
of the idea that love is not so much a way of feeling as a way
of acting, and a reliable sense of humor."
From 1967 to 1980, Unsworth was chaplain and professor of
religion at Smith. He then served as headmaster and president
of the Northfield Mount Herman School and headmaster of the Berkshire
School. An ordained minister of the United Presbyterian Church,
U.S.A., he is also chairman emeritus of the Board of Trustees
of Mount Holyoke College and a trustee of the Eaglebrook School.
He has been an assistant chaplain at Yale University, dean of
the William Jewett Tucker Foundation and professor of religion
at Dartmouth College, and has served as a trustee of the American
School of Tangier and the College Cevenol in France.
