Art Institute of Chicago
Curator to Lecture
Art Institute of Chicago curator Sylvia Wolf will lecture
on "Julia Margaret Cameron's Women," at 5 p.m. Thursday,
November 19, in the Neilson Library Browsing Room, Smith College.
Cameron (1815-1879), a British photographer, was known for
her soft-focus portraits of notable Victorian men and women such
as Tennyson and Ellen Terry. One of Cameron's favorite models
was her niece, Julia Stephen, mother of Virginia Woolf.
Selections from the collection, including the photo album
of Virginia Woolf's father, Leslie Stephen, will be on display
in the foyer of Neilson Library.
The lecture is in memory of Elizabeth P. Richardson, a 1943
graduate of Smith College who recently bequeathed her Bloomsbury
iconography collection to the Mortimer Rare Book Room.
Both the lecture and reception that follows are free and open
to the public.
