Remarkable Alumnae Honored
at Celebration of the Liberal Arts Hundreds of parents of Smith students and Smith alumnae from all over the country, along with current Smith students, faculty and staff, attended the event, which marked the beginning of Smith's 125th year and initiated a weekend-long celebration of the liberal arts as they are taught today at Smith. The event featured greetings by Rochelle Braff Lazarus '68, chair of the board of trustees, talks by President Ruth Simmons and Student Government Association President Katrina Gardner, a colorful academic procession, and music by the Smith College Orchestra and Glee Club. Providing the instrumental music for this historic celebration was the Smith College Orchestra (top). Among the remarkable alumnae being honored were Dorcas Bowles M.S.S. '60, dean of the Clark Atlanta University School for Social Work (above) and Betty Friedan '42, feminist leader and author (below).
