Achilles Professor of Geology Robert Burger and Smith alum Jennifer Fleming '90 recently joined forces to put together a cyberspace exhibit on volcano phenomenon for the large Annenberg/CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) Projects exhibit collection on the World Wide Web. Each month a new exhibit is added to the collection (www.learner.org/exhibits/volcanoes), which covers more than 35 subjects ranging from science to art, writing and literature. It is designed to electronically provide a diverse adult audience with high-quality interactive learning experiences.

Fleming, one of two Annenberg/CPB project managers for the exhibits collection, said that Burger's exhibit premiered last October and is archived and available for viewing on the Web site. Burger chose the topics for the volcano site and developed the content for the exhibit, which includes written text, diagrams and activities. His exhibit includes information on why volcanoes erupt in different ways, how to cope with the risk of eruptions, and links to more than a dozen other related web sites.

The Smith Office of College Relations welcomed Laurie Fenlason, its new director of media relations, in early January. She is the former executive director of college relations at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

At Smith, Fenlason's responsibilities include raising the college's visibility and promoting its mission and programs through strong working relationships with members of the regional and national press. "Laurie's extensive experience in media relations and strategic communications planning will be of great benefit to Smith in developing messages to describe the new initiatives and directions the college will take as it moves into the next century," says B. Ann Wright, chief public affairs and college relations officer.

Fenlason, a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, will replace Ann Shanahan, who has served as interim director of media relations since July 1996. Shanahan is staying on in the office as director of administration and special events.

Eleanor Rothman, the founding director of the Ada Comstock Scholars Program, will leave her current position this year to assume a new post as director of Ada Comstock Initiatives for the Future. In her new position, she will work closely with Smith President Ruth Simmons to enhance funding and address long-standing Ada needs, including those related to housing. "Under Ellie Rothman's leadership, the Ada program has reached the national prominence it enjoys today; we are fortunate that she is willing to lead our effort to enhance its future," Simmons says.

The program, established in 1975, enables women of nontraditional age to complete a bachelor of arts degree through either full- or part-time study. Almost 1,700 women, ranging in age from their 20s to their mid-70s, have enrolled at Smith as members of the program in the 23 years Rothman has been its director. During that time, 1,230 have graduated.

One of Rothman's new goals will be to raise the level of financial support for the program and to increase the outreach to Ada Comstock alumnae, she says. She also plans to seek additional funding sources from foundations and corporations.

Smith will launch a national search, starting this spring, to find Rothman's successor as director of the Ada Comstock Program.
