Maddow Addresses Class of 2010 at Commencement

Rachel Maddow, a political commentator who rose to national prominence after launching her career on local radio, was the speaker at Smith’s 132nd Commencement ceremony on May 16. Maddow and four other accomplished women—renowned dance composer Martha Myers S.M. '50, record-setter Victoria "Tori" Murden McClure '85, environmental justice advocate Peggy M. Shepard and global activist Princess Basma Bint Talal of Jordan—received honorary degrees.

The Smith Class of 2010 included 733 baccalaureate degree recipients, representing:

  • 709 bachelor of arts degrees
  • 22 bachelor of science degrees
  • 145 double-majors
  • 47 states and 29 countries
  • 62 Ada Comstock Scholars (students of nontraditional age)
  • The five most popular majors were psychology, economics, art (art history, art studio, architecture and urbanism), government and English.
