Calling All Houses Into
Service
Whether they are volunteering at a nearby food bank farm or hosting a walk to raise
money for the victims of the Pakistan earthquake, Smith students and their house
communities are responding to President Carol Christ’s invitation to take part
in community service and sustainability initiatives throughout the year.
Hopkins House, which plans to center much of its community service on the theme of food and hunger, is
among the participants. The group activity was a logical choice, according to organizers, since Hopkins
is a cooperative whose residents share the responsibilities for purchasing food and preparing house meals.
Each participating house must complete a portfolio by April to showcase all completed and future community
service projects for the academic year. A committee of faculty and students will evaluate the portfolios
in such areas as quality and longevity of service as well as overall engagement of the house community.
Outstanding houses will receive a donation for an agency or charitable organization of their choice.
