Board of Trustees Welcomes Six New Members

The Smith College Board of Trustees welcomed six new members who will begin their governance duties July 1. The new board members include five alumnae and the retiring president of Spelman College in Atlanta.

Greta W. Stacy, class of 2015—a chemistry and American studies major at Smith and president of the Student Government Association during her senior year—will serve a two-year term on the board. Stacy, of Woodbury, Minn., was a member of the college’s swimming and diving teams. She was also a member of the student senate, chair of the elections and appointments committee and served as a master tutor for organic chemistry during her time at Smith.

Other new trustees, who will serve four-year terms on the board, are:

Camille O’Bryant, class of 1983 (A.B.) and 1986 (M.S.), is professor of kinesiology and associate dean in the College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. There, she teaches courses on the psychosocial aspects of physical activity; sport and gender; and sport, media and American popular culture. O’Bryant, who majored in French at Smith, earned a master’s degree in exercise and sport studies from the college and a doctorate in sport, leisure and somatic studies from The Ohio State University.

Deborah Lindenauer Weinberg, class of 1981, served as vice president of J.P. Morgan from 1985 to 1990. Her civic and philanthropic activities include service as a trustee of the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center and a member of the Board of Visitors at Columbia University Medical Center, the Dean’s Board of Advisors for Harvard Business School, and the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club. Weinberg, who majored in economics at Smith, earned an M.B.A. from Harvard University.

Patricia Friedman Ribakoff, class of 1980, is founder and president of Friedman Ribakoff Group, a marketing and fundraising consultancy firm in Boston. Ribakoff serves as a trustee and co-chair of Philanthropy for Massachusetts General Hospital, where she has helped lead the hospital’s $1.7 billion Campaign for the Third Century of Medicine. She also serves as a trustee for UNICEF, The Maranyundo School for Girls in Rwanda and the Harr Motor Companies. Ribakoff, who majored in government at Smith, is a former vice president of business development for Technimetrics, Inc.

Lisa Toner Heffernan, class of 1977, worked for more than 30 years in investment banking, primarily in New York and London, before retiring in 2008. She specialized in mergers and acquisitions at J.P. Morgan and capital markets for UBS Warburg before becoming head of the consumer products team for Goldman Sachs. Heffernan is also a former director of Pelham Partners Ltd. An economics major at Smith, she spent her junior year in Geneva and went on to earn an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Beverly Daniel Tatum will retire July 31 as president of Spelman College, a leading educator of women of African descent. She has served in that position since 2002. Tatum formerly served as dean and acting president of Mount Holyoke College and has taught at the University of California Santa Barbara and Westfield State University. An author and race relations expert, she serves on the boards of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Teach for America and the Institute for International Education. Tatum earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Wesleyan University and a master’s and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. She also holds a master’s in religious studies from Hartford Seminary.
