Commitment to Women’s Global Education

Long recognized as a leader in international education, Smith is a world college for the world's women. Since the early 1900s, the college has had an international emphasis in its curriculum and was a pioneer in the field of study abroad when it established its Paris Junior Year Abroad program in 1925. Today, Smith offers 13 languages and several programs in interdisciplinary areas and international studies. Faculty members teach more than 400 courses relating to international issues and many more that examine different cultures within the United States. Each year, hundreds of Smith students study abroad, often incorporating internships into their experiences, while the Smith campus welcomes students from all 50 states and 70 countries.

With faculty of varied international backgrounds and interests, courses on distinct cultures of the world and many languages spoken on campus, Smith is a world college. The study of other countries and cultures and the complex interactions among them is featured throughout the curriculum, indeed throughout the college.

Smith offers more than 400 courses addressing international issues, more than 150 courses in foreign languages and civilizations, and many more courses that study different cultures in and outside of the United States. Additionally, many first-year seminars and presidential seminars incorporate a global perspective, as do other courses throughout the curriculum.
