Fall 2021 Guidelines

If you are sick or symptomatic, stay home. Visitors are asked not to come to campus if they are sick or symptomatic.

Masking

Indoors Masks are required except when alone in a bedroom (or with a roommate), in an enclosed work space or when eating.
Outdoors Although masks are not mandatory outdoors, we welcome those who would like to continue to wear them. We advise everyone to wear masks in crowded situations. Some outdoor events may require masks. Mask requirements will be communicated with the event.

Testing

Students Students are required to be tested twice weekly in Smith’s asymptomatic testing program. Schedule a COVID-19 test.
Employees Weekly testing required for those fully vaccinated and twice weekly testing for those who have an approved exemption from vaccination. Schedule a COVID-19 test.

Positive Cases

Students Residential students who test positive will be moved temporarily to isolation housing.
Employees Employees who test positive must remain home.

Guidelines for Close Contacts of Positive Cases

Symptomatic students & employees Stay home and follow guidance of medical providers.
Asymptomatic vaccinated students & employees May continue to work, attend class, and participate in activities.
PCR test 3-5 days after exposure
Must remain masked at all times unless alone in a fully enclosed space with the door closed. No indoor dining.
Asymptomatic unvaccinated students Quarantine in isolation housing until cleared by the Schacht Center. Food will be delivered.
Asymptomatic unvaccinated employees Quarantine at home and follow healthcare provider’s guidance for return to work.

Students

Visitors in Traditional Housing No external invited guests are to be hosted in residential buildings. Requests for exceptions should be directed to residence life. Guests must follow all Smith health and safety protocols. Guests are not allowed in student dining rooms. Smith students are allowed to visit other residence halls.
Meetings, Gatherings, Student Activities and Affinity Groups Gatherings of members of the Smith community (and Five College students) are allowed. External presenters, trainers or lecturers are allowed, but must follow visitor guidelines. Student-organized gatherings that include members of the public are not allowed. Exceptions are rarely approved by CIRT. Email covid19info@smith.edu.

Dining We encourage outdoor eating and small groups when indoors. Grab and go food is available.
Varsity Athletics Varsity competition will take place following NCAA and NEWMAC conference guidelines. In line with college policy, spectators are permitted after November 8 at indoor events. Outdoor events and competitions are open to spectators who must maintain distancing and may not interact with the teams. Masks may be required at certain outdoor events. Tailgating is not allowed at this time.
Club Sports Club sport competition may take place. All athletes must be masked and competitors must participate in a testing protocol on their home campus. Tailgating is not allowed at this time.
Olin Fitness Center and Athletics Facilities Open to current student OneCard holders who are in the testing program.

Faculty

Classes All Smith courses this fall will be on campus and in person, and the expectation is that scheduled class time will be devoted to in-person instruction. As has always been the case, however, faculty may, from time to time, substitute alternative activities for a limited amount of in-class seat time; some of these alternative activities might involve synchronous remote engagement.

Domestic Faculty Travel Travel for scholarly purposes is allowed. Please follow CDC guidance and use common sense regarding destinations and protocols.
International Faculty Travel Travel for scholarly purposes is allowed. Please follow CDC guidance and use common sense regarding destinations and protocols.
Student Travel Associated With Faculty Research Travel for research and scholarship is allowed following regular registration and funding procedures.
Olin Fitness Center Open to OneCard holders who are in the testing program. Dependents and guests are not allowed at this time.
Collections (museum, botanic gardens) See botanic garden and museum websites.
Visitors Guests are allowed in most campus buildings during open hours and must follow all Smith health and safety protocols. Please note that Neilson remains open only to students and employees. Some guests and contractors will need to follow college vaccination guidelines.

Staff

Travel Travel will be limited, and departments should make travel decisions following budget guidance that encourages lower spending for travel, catering and food. Please follow CDC guidance and use common sense regarding destinations and protocols.

Campus Center Open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and by OneCard access until 11 p.m.
External Events Smith College is not accepting reservations for external events until further notice.
Performing Arts Events College-sponsored performing arts events may be opened to the public following the external attendees at events policy. If not open to the public, in person audiences are limited to Smith OneCard holders in the testing program and Five College students.
