Opportunities To Build Community

Community Letters 24-25

Published September 30, 2024

Dear Smith Community,

Although we never know what the future brings, we now find ourselves in a season where interaction and reflection can be of particular comfort. Conflicts around the globe continue and, in this country, the election provokes varied emotions. Smith’s priority remains to support our community in ways only a residential college can—by offering space for discussion, education, and exchange that is grounded in a spirit of curiosity and compassion.

As a college and as a community, we seek to engage across differences and find ways to acknowledge and celebrate one another. This fall, we have the opportunity to do both. Informal gatherings designed to help us get to know each other, programming that helps us understand our world, and events that let us safely express our feelings and opinions are all ways we can fortify ourselves and each other. We ask that you bookmark this page to stay up to date with ways we can all continue to engage with each other throughout the semester.

In her welcome back letter, President Sarah encouraged us to “find an approach that is uniquely Smith” and to make this season one of “listening, respect, connection, and joy.” We look forward to doing just that with all of you in the weeks ahead.

Sincerely,

Ehle DeVaughn, SGA President
Caroline Bertrand and Andrea Fernandes, Staff Council Co-Chairs
Nathan Derr, Faculty Council Chair
