Paradise Pond and Lyman Pond Draw Down
October 15, 2012
Maintenance begins this week on the Paradise Pond dam, which will require a partial draw-down of the pond's water level. The jogging path around the pond will be fenced off from the spillway north past the softball field during the project, expected to take about two months. The Lyman Plant House pond will be dredged for repairs and reshaping. If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact Gary Hartwell, Project Manager, ghartwel@smith.edu.

Talk on Plastic Plague: Our Disposables and Ourselves

Join Maggie Chumbley, a global educator and activist, for a talk on Plastic Pollution. Plastic Pollution is an emerging environmental issue (much like global warming was 30 years ago). Together we will explore the shocking facts and multiple consequences of this issue. We'll look at the great pacific garbage patch, plastic beaches, recycling, the toxicity in our own bodies, and more. We will also examine our own core beliefs and the core beliefs of our disposable culture. We'll view stunning film footage from Midway Island and talk about the symbolic environmental tragedy it represents.

Apple Orchard Workshops with holistic apple grower Michael Phillip

9am-12pm: Creating a Healthy Orchard 12pm-2pm: Bring your own picnic lunch to the field station 2pm-5pm: Home Orchard Basics Join CEEDS for a workshop with organic apple specialist Michael Phillips, expert on holistic orchard management and collaborator in the “community orchard movement.” Learn about setting up an orchard and successfully growing fruit. Van shuttles available: 8:30am, 10:30am, and 1:30am from between Chapin and the Campus Center, with return trips at 12pm, and after the workshop at 5pm. Reservations for spots in the van can be made at CEEDS or via a message to Sarah Loomis .

Lecture: Effective Advocacy: Protecting Animals, People, and Our Planet

Ten billion land animals are raised for food in the U.S. every year. The vast majority are raised on factory farms, large-scale industrialized operations that pollute the environment and treat animals more like widgets than creatures capable of suffering. Join us to learn about the impact factory farms have on animals, our planet and ourselves and then learn how you can make a difference. This lecture is presented by Alexis Fox, Massachusetts state director, and Joshua Balk, director of corporate policy for the Humane Society of the United States.
