Kombucha Tasting!

Join Franny Krushinsky, Dining Services Sustainability & Culinary Manager to try out kombucha made locally by Katalyst Kombucha. Health Benefits: Kombucha tea is a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. Although it's sometimes referred to as kombucha mushroom tea, kombucha is not a mushroom — it's a colony of bacteria and yeast. Kombucha tea is made by adding the colony to sugar and tea, and allowing the mix to ferment. The resulting liquid contains vinegar, B vitamins and a number of other chemical compounds. Proponents claim kombucha tea can stimulate the immune system, help to prevent and cure cancer, and improve digestion and liver function. SWG Reads the News lunches

We all read the news in different forms: as ticker tape under the tv broadcaster, in newspapers, on Facebook, twitter or as blog posts. But we often read it alone, even if with running commentary talking back to the news as we do so. Members of SWG invite you to join a more collective setting in Duckett Dining Hall over a Friday lunch to read the news: that is, decipher it, ask questions, give reactions, add new frames, in a sense, re-write the news. For those not on the meal plan, primarily staff and faculty, your lunch is on us.

Bike Kitchen Workshops
September 30, 2014
The Bike Kitchen staff will be hosting a mechanics workshop this fall. It will be Tuesdays from 4-6. The workshop series started on September 23rd and will continue every Tuesday through November 11, except over fall break. The series is a great introduction to bike mechanics if you want to learn to fix bikes but aren't sure where to start! "Fixing Hours" will be Sundays from 1 pm to 3 pm and Thursdays from 4 pm to 6 pm. Feel free to bring your bike in for maintenance or swing by to hone your fixing skills.

Operation Wallacea Info Session
October 3, 2014
OpWall is a biodiversity research and conservation management organization hosting scientific expeditions in Indonesia, Transylvania, South Africa, Madagascar, Peru, Guyana,Honduras, and Mexico. Students can join as Research Assistants (internship and credit options available) and receive training in different survey techniques such as mist-netting, SCUBA diving, GIS, camera-trapping, stereo-video transects of coral reefs, and much more. Students can also join as Thesis Students and collect data for a specific research project. Some of the research topics offered on site include marine ecology, agriculture, spatial ecology, genetics, herpetofauna, and environmental science. There is even a unique expedition for Pre-Med students looking to experience field medicine. Most importantly, all the research goes towards protecting valuable ecosystems by levering funding and monitoring the success of various conservation management strategies. Come learn how you can get involved!

Info session: Operation Wallacea

Dr Tim Coles, the Founder of the Opwall research programs worldwide will be running a seminar about internship or senior thesis fieldwork options for summer 2015. If you have time it would be well worth going to this seminar. We have had a few students in the past who have joined this field research program and greatly benefitted. Opwall have research on 3D mapping of reefs in Honduras, using stereo video to quantify reef fish communities in Madagascar, Indonesia, Honduras and Cuba, turtle vigilance behaviour and setting sustainable snorkelling levels in Mexico, bar coding and metagenomics to identify total tropical diversity of invertebrates in a cloud forest in Honduras, quantifying impacts of elephants and other large herbivores on veld condition in South Africa, primate behaviour projects on lemurs in Madagascar and spider monkeys in Mexico and many other projects
