Brown bag lunch talk- Projecting Climate Change Using Models November 23, 2015 with Dr. Kirk Maasch, Professor in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. Maasch, who has over 20 years of experience using climate models and statistical methods to investigate the causes of climate change across time scales ranging from years to millions of years, will talk about climate models, their role in policy development, their accuracy and assumptions. Inaugural Opening: Plant Life Through the Ages: A Mural of Plant Evolution December 3, 2015 The Botanic Garden is proud to unveil a new 60-foot mural, consisting of eight panels depicting great moments in plant evolution. The stunning paintings were created by muralist Robert Evans. His work can be found at the Smithsonian, Mount Vernon, and numerous museums, zoos and aquaria; this is his first installation at a botanical garden. Events Off Campus World on Edge: War and Peace in the Climate Age Era December 2, 2015 The world is currently suffering from a proliferation of violent conflicts and social upheavals, including wars in Iraq, Syria. Libya, Yemen and Afghanistan, along with a massive tide of refugees seeking to escape all this violence. At the same time, we are seeing increasing evidence of the impact of climate change on human societies, in the form of droughts, floods, forest fires and coastal erosion. How will these two trends interact? Will climate change make war more or less likely? No final answer can be provided to these questions, but some trends are beginning to emerge. Events at Smith Presentation: From Waste to Resource December 4, 2015 Smith College generates approximately 1,560 tons of organic material annually. The ENX 301 class has explored different composting methods that would take advantage of this organic material by turning it into a resource while reducing Smith’s carbon footprint.
