Presentation: GIS maps for Two Local Non-profits

This year, students in the Introduction to GIS course (ENV/GEO 150) have partnered with two community non-profits — Mass Audubon and the Kestrel Land Trust — to carry out projects that promote the mission of those organizations. "Story Mapping the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary" (Community partner: Mass Audubon) — Julia Franchi Scarselli '18, Anastasia Konefal '17, and Morgan Mpungose '17; "Mapping the distribution of hemlock trees at Graves Farm Sanctuary (Community partner: Mass Audubon) — Haleigh Anderson '19, Sophie D'Arcy '16, Bryn Gingrich '16, and Tessa McGann '16; "Story Mapping the Mount Holyoke Range" (Community partner: Kestrel Land Trust) — Aixin Li '17, Zoe Mitrisin '18, and Dulce Mora Flores AC; "Developing a hunting policy for Kestrel Land Trust properties" (Community partner: Kestrel Land Trust) — Chloe Brownlie '17, Jonathan Cartledge (Staff), and Charlotte Mann '17; "Developing a trail network at the Sawmill Hills Conservation Area" (Community partner: Kestrel Land Trust) — Dan Babineau (Staff), Olivia Daddi '17, Danielle Opatovsky '16, and Celeste Venolia '17Please come to learn about these projects and celebrate the students' hard work! Film Screening: Just Eat IT: A Food Waste Documentary

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. Featuring interviews with TED lecturer, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.
