Opening Up The Parenting Journey
BY CHRISTINA BARBER-JUST

Published September 16, 2021

Parenting Journey is a Somerville, Massachusetts–based organization founded by family therapist Anne Labouisse Peretz ’60 that provides therapy to at-risk, low-income parents. It’s a global organization now, with more than 500 locations in the United States, Latin America, and Africa.

But, as Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. recounts in his foreword to Peretz’s debut book, Opening Up: The Parenting Journey, “Peretz and her team began with minimal resources, working out of their vehicles in order to provide free services to traumatized families within their homes in housing projects.” Opening Up tells the story of the organization from the perspective of its participants—an approach Gates applauds. “Now more than ever,” he writes, “Peretz’s affirming stories offer much-needed hope and inspiration, an invaluable gift in these times.”
