News of Note
Published March 9, 2020
As part of its ongoing response to COVID-19, Smith College has announced that it will limit large gatherings on campus by requiring that public events with an expected attendance of 50 or more people be canceled, postponed or, if possible, moved to online delivery methods.
The new policy is in place through May 1 and may be extended.
“As of today, there are no suspected or confirmed cases of the disease on our campus,” said David DeSwert, vice president for finance and administration. “It is our responsibility, however, to take informed, proactive steps to ensure the continued safety of our community.”
Among the events that are canceled or postponed are:
- The Smith College Bulb Show
- The March 31 Presidential Colloquium by Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative
- The March 24 Presidential Colloquium by Gina McCarthy, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council
The complete list is currently being determined, and certain events tied to academic credit will go on, even if attendance is expected to be above 50.
