House Given Historic Award
 Conway House, Smith’s
residence for Ada Comstock Scholars located at 21 Prospect
Street, received a 2007 Historic Preservation Award from
the Northampton Historical Commission in late May.
The award is given annually to local buildings and properties
in recognition of respectful restoration, renovation or new
construction, and honors exemplary civic contributions to
historic preservation awareness.
“The commission appreciates the sensitivity of the
design and the exemplary manner in which the new building
blends with its neighborhood setting,” says an award
citation addressed to President Carol T. Christ and Smith
College trustees.
 The award was presented to Smith administrators on May 22
during a ceremony at the Florence Civic Association. May
is National Preservation Month.
Conway House is a 10-unit residence featuring two-bedroom
apartments and a central gathering place overlooking a playground.
The apartments were designed by Thomas Douglas Architects,
Inc., with input from Ada Comstock Scholars, and built by
Marois Construction Co., Inc.
The building was named after former Smith College President
Jill Ker Conway, who initiated the Ada Comstock Scholars
Program for nontraditional-aged students. Conway joined President
Carol T. Christ in dedicating Conway House on October 19,
2006. Ada Comstock Scholars and their children moved into
the building last August.
