Students,
Orgs Honored for Excellence
The fourth annual Recognizing
Excellence Awards, which honor the “outstanding contributions made by student leaders
and students organizations at Smith,” were presented
on April 18 during a reception in the Campus Center.
The awards, which are sponsored by the Campus Center and
the Student Government Association, were established in 2004.
Following opening remarks by Julianne Ohotnicky, dean of
students, and entertainment provided by the a cappella group
Groove, awards were presented at the reception in nine categories:
- Lamont House -- Outstanding
Community Service Award; in recognition of
the development of an ongoing or one-time community
service project or program.
- Caitlin Bates ’07

Outstanding House President; in
recognition of the outstanding positive impact on
a living community by a House President.
- Trea Schumacher ’09
-- Outstanding Student Employee; in
recognition of an individual student employee’s
contribution to the Smith community through their
initiative, consistency, reliability and commitment
to professionalism and customer service.
- Jocelyn Thomas ’08
and Emily Yen ’09 -- Social
Justice; in recognition
of an individual for their demonstrated commitment
to issues of social justice in the Smith College
and greater community.
- Puja Singhal ’08 --
Unsung Hero; in recognition of an
individual who does not hold a leadership position,
but consistently gives their all to an organization,
going above and beyond the call of duty.
- Katherine Yohay ’07
-- Pioneer Award; in recognition
of an individual student who most widely represents
the symbolic vision of a Pioneer, one who has embraced
new challenges and/or succeeded amid significant
obstacles.
- AWARE (Activist Women Advocating
for Rape Education) -- Programming
Excellence; for
the organization’s recent Sexual Abuse Awareness
Week series; in recognition of innovative and outstanding
achievements in the planning and presentation of
a program by a student organization.
- WOZQ 91.9 FM and the Smith
Science Fiction and Fantasy Society --Outstanding
Student Organization; in recognition of
the positive impact on the Smith community and the
outstanding accomplishments of a recognized student
organization.
- Tamar Malloy ’07 --
Outstanding Student Leader; in recognition of an
outstanding student leader who has demonstrated excellence
in scholarship as well as in their contribution to
the Smith community through leadership.
