On Tuesday, June 12, more than a thousand people from
the Smith community will gather for the largest
college community event of the year. Note: Due to a forecast of severe thunderstorms,
heavy winds and the possibility of hail, the event will take place inside
the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
The annual
Staff-Faculty Picnic will feature, as always, a field full
of inflatable activities, including a massive slide, a bouncy
house for the little ones, and a fastball pitching area.
Also, back by popular request this year will be a four-sided
climbing wall and a tethered trampoline. Meanwhile, face-
and nail-painters will offer their artistic renderings and
a DJ will spin music for listening and dancing.
All the
while, picnic food, grilled fresh on the premises, and an
assortment of beverages and desserts will keep the crowd satisfied.
The picnic
will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Along with opportunities
to eat, have fun and socialize with fellow employees and
their families, the annual picnic also offers a chance to
contribute to a worthy cause. Each year, the picnic includes
a fundraising campaign to raise money for a local charitable
organization.
This year’s event raised
several hundred dollars for Friends of Children, a child
advocacy agency in Florence, and the Interfaith Cot Shelter,
a local organization that provides shelter for homeless people.
Past recipients of Faculty-Staff
Picnic fundraising have included Jessie’s House, the
Northampton Survival Center, the American Cancer Society,
and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Massachusetts.
This June 12, keep in mind,
as you’re winding up for
your best fast pitch or munching grilled chicken, that the
annual Faculty-Staff Picnic is not only an opportunity to
have a good time; it also raises much-needed funds for local
charitable organizations.
