Bidding Farewell to Those Headed Abroad

Hello. Goodbye.

That’s the gist of the exchange of about 150 Smith sophomores when they gather on Friday, April 6, to bid farewell to their fellow classmates heading for Junior Year Abroad next year.

The “Hello Goodbye” sundae bar, which was coordinated by the class of 2009, will give sophomores a chance to discuss their plans next year and to discover who will be going where and who will be staying on campus.

The students will gather from noon to 2 in the Campus Center.

“Being sophomores, many of us have applied to study abroad,” said Marni Mallari, class of 2009 social chair. “This event will allow sophomores to recognize those who are studying abroad and those who are staying at Smith.”

More than 60 students have already been accepted to Smith’s JYA programs in Paris, Geneva, Florence and Hamburg. At least 200 students have applied to study in another than 35 other countries, including seven in Africa and several in Latin American nations.

“We took this as the perfect opportunity to celebrate the class of 2009 in their decisions to stay or go next year,” said Aliza Leventhal, class of 2009 president. “The objective is to get sophomores in the same room and to mingle and see who will be where next year – a big question hanging over every sophomore’s head.”

Final decisions on where applicants are headed abroad will be made by April 23.

Meanwhile, Friday, over ice cream, sophomores will say hello—and goodbye.
