Dance
the Night Away for United Way
 For the Asian Students
Association (ASA), an upcoming event provides a way to
have fun while supporting the college’s
outreach to the community.
“I Love the 90s: Buy a Beauty,” a
dance auction and party coordinated by ASA, will offer
student participants up for bid as partners on the dance
floor to raise money for the United Way of Hampshire County.
The event will take place on Friday, April 11, from 9 p.m.
to 1 a.m. in the Gamut at Mendenhall Center for the Performing
Arts. The event is free, but a donation of $2 is suggested
to attend.
“The ASA decided to host this event as a way to bring
members of the Smith and Five-College communities together,” said
Aarin Murray, ASA social chair, who is helping plan the event. “We
decided upon United Way as our beneficiary because we like
the organization’s holistic agenda, how United Way
supports a multitude of local charitable agencies in order
to strengthen the community as a whole.”
The ASA dance auction
occurs on the heels of the successful completion of the
college’s annual United Way campaign.
Smith employees contributed $160,000 to the United Way of
Hampshire County through the college campaign. As in most
years, Smith is the largest institutional donor to the local
United Way, accounting for more than 13 percent of the organization’s
$1.2 million goal this year.
 The United Way of Hampshire
County distributes money throughout the year to that provide food for needyfamilies,
help battered and threatened women find safe shelter, offer
participatory programs for seniors and at-risk teens, subsidize
childcare so that single parents can work, and many other
services. Most importantly, the United Way seeks to bring
people together with the aim of improving life for everyone
in the Pioneer Valley.
The ASA hopes to raise
at least $300 for the United Way through the “I Love the 90s” event, said Murray,
while throwing “one swinging party. Participants will
be auctioning themselves off for the evening’s dance.
Then auctioneers and bidders can dance to their favorite
90s hits.”
Meanwhile, they will be
helping those in need in Smith’s
local community.
