Owners
of Sophia Smith House Honored
Martin Antonetti, curator
of rare books, and Nina Antonetti, assistant professor
of landscape studies, recently received this year’s
Preservation Award from the Hatfield Historical Commission
for their extensive renovation of the former home of Sophia
Smith.
The Antonettis purchased
the house in which Sophia Smith was raised, located at
22 Main St. in Hatfield, from Smith College in 2006. Since
moving in with their now 9-year-old daughter, Georgia,
the couple has updated two of the home’s
bedrooms, renovated the kitchen and dining room, and built
a new garage.
The Antonettis took special
care to make sure all the renovations considered the home’s
historical context. The house was built in 1790 and was
deeded to Smith College in 1946. It was used as a rental
property by Smith faculty and staff until its sale to the
Antonettis.
The deed to the Sophia Smith house includes a covenant that
the house will eventually be resold to the college.
The Antonettis were presented
with the annaul award during a meeting of the Historical Society
last week.
