Celebrations to Perform for Commencement Weekend

The Celebrations Dance Company will bring to life the children’s picture book favorite Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak during Smith’s commencement weekend.

The concert marks the 25th anniversary of this student-run dance company and will be performed Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 17, at 2:30 p.m. in the Scott Dance Studio Theater.

The program will include a combination of new and restaged works choreographed by various members of the Smith dance community. Five College lecturer/professor of dance Marilyn Middleton-Sylla of the Bamidele Dancers and Drummers, will debut a commissioned original work. The concert will also include choreography by MFA students Maura Donohue (former artistic director for Celebrations), Audra Carabetta (former Celebrations member), Jillian Grunnah, and Lona Lee, and by several undergraduates, including current artistic director Zoë Marr ‘08.

For the past 25 years, Celebrations Dance Company has functioned on campus as a student-run organization, founded to celebrate marginalized forms of dance, including West-African and Jazz. Over the decades these forms have expanded to include the dance backgrounds of the company’s membership.

This student-run organization provides a unique space for students to choreograph and produce works in a supportive community. Currently there are 17 members of Celebrations Dance Company.

Celebrations is sponsored by the Smith College Department of Dance and the Smith College Student Government Association.

Tickets: $7 general admission, $5 students/seniors. For more information and reservations, call (802) 345-7254 or email: Zoe Marr, zmarr@email.smith. Seating is limited.
