Electrical
Testing May Cause Brief Power Outages Before 7 a.m. on August
12
Smith College
will begin testing the new campus power system at 5 a.m.
on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The test is expected to cause two temporary
power outages, each lasting up to 10 minutes, between 5 and
7 that morning.
Testing will continue after Aug. 12, but additional power
outages are unlikely; the project is expected to wrap up
by Sept. 9.
To protect computer data stored on the main campus server
that Tuesday, Information Technology Services (ITS) plans
to shut down all network servers from 4 to 10 a.m. That means
the following computer services will be unavailable during
that time period: Internet access; GroupWise email; network
printers; Moodle; Banner, BannerWeb and Resource25; Luna
Insight; key-served software; BlackBerry enterprise server;
access to Smith network; some on-campus telephone and OneCard
services.
If you work on a computer
at Smith...
...And need
to work on documents stored on a network drive Aug.
12 between 4 and 10 a.m.: Put a copy of
those files on your desktop or on your hard drive.
As long as there is electrical power, you will be
able to use all applications and files stored on
your local hard drive.
...And you are
a Windows user: When the Novell login
window appears, click in the “Workstation only” checkbox.
The username will typically fill in as "Smith." Click “OK” and
you will be able to access your local hard drive.
...And you are
making changes to a document: Save your
changes often.
...And you have
additional questions: Call the User Support
Center at ext. 4487. |
If you reside in a campus
house...
...And depend
on an electric alarm clock to wake you:
Determine a back-up plan in advance. Ask someone
to call you on your cell phone or ask someone who
does not rely on an alarm clock to wake you.
...And the outage
causes a disruption in telephone service: Before
Aug. 12, find out who else in the residence has a
cell phone. If there is a disruption of telephone
service, and an emergency arises, use that cell phone
to notify Public Safety at (413) 585-2490.
...And there is
a fire alarm during the outage: Follow
the usual protocol and evacuate the building immediately. |
Check for updates on the testing. This
is a necessary test of Smith’s new technology related
to the co-generation power system. We apologize for any
inconvenience this testing causes the Smith community
and its visitors.
