Janice Oresman ’55,
former Smith College Trustee, long-time supporter of the
college in many areas, and an influential art adviser and
curator, was presented on Oct. 18 with the John M. Greene
Award.
The award is given to
people who have rendered service to the college “beyond the call of duty,” and who
personify the Smith motto, “To virtue, knowledge,” in
their service and in their lives.
Oresman joins past award
winners Leo Weinstein, John Connolly, Kate Belcher Webster ’46 and Ann Shanahan ’59
among others. She was presented with the award during a ceremony
at the Alumnae House.
“With unfailing enthusiasm, generosity and pride,
you have served Smith College for more than 50 years, leaving
virtually no corner of our campus, no aspect of
our programs,
untouched by your energy and commitment to your alma mater,” said
Mary Patterson McPherson ’57, chair of the Board of
Trustees, in the award citation. “In addition to your
support of the museum, libraries and botanic gardens, your
service to Smith has encompassed leadership on almost every
level: president of your class, chair of the Grécourt
Society and membership on the Board of Trustees from 1992
to 2002. Perhaps most importantly, you served as a member
of the search committee that selected Smith’s tenth
president, Carol T. Christ. The depth of your commitment
to Smith College is a rare gift.”
