Local Schools Host Renowned Theater Group

Partners in Health, a
collaboration between Smith College and the Northampton
Public Schools to promote the health and wellness of Northampton’s
youth, is bringing Nitestar Theatre to Northampton on March
4 and 5 for two days of workshops and performances at the
Northampton High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School.
Nitestar is a nationally acclaimed New York City-based theater
group that uses drama and peer education to bring lifesaving
health information to youth. All music, shows, and dance
are original. The company presents to youth, parents, and
health care providers throughout New York City and nationwide.
Founded in 1987 by Executive Director Cydelle Berlin, to
date, Nitestar programs have reached over 1.5 million people.
Nitestar will offer an
evening performance titled “Everybody’s
Doing It!” for middle and high school parents, faculty,
and staff on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Northampton
High School auditorium. This performance is open to all adults
in the community and is free of charge. Parents attending
will be eligible to win raffle prizes, including a $100 gift
certificate to downtown Northampton. Attending teachers will
be eligible for Professional Development Points. On Wednesday,
March 5, the theater company will travel to JFK Middle School
to give another performance and workshops for all 8th-graders.
Topics to be discussed include drugs and alcohol, peer pressure,
conflict and violence, self-esteem, decision-making, and
accepting differences.
Partners in Health is an ongoing collaboration among health
educators and counselors at JFK Middle school, Northampton
High School, the Northampton Public Schools Department, and
Smith College. Partners in Health is sponsored by a grant
to Smith College from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute,
