the World Beat
It’s about music. It’s
about dance, and cultural entertainment from disparate
corners of the globe.
Most of all, Rhythm Nations is about people coming together.
Rhythm Nations, the annual performance smorgasbord presented
by the International Students Organization (ISO), will take
place this year on Saturday, April 5, starting at 7 p.m.
in John M. Greene Hall. Admission is free.
The event is a celebration
of the many different cultures represented at Smith. More
than 200 students from 58 different countries make their
temporary homes at Smith. Fittingly, this year’s Rhythm Nations trumpets the theme “World
Carnival: Different Beats, One Vibe!”
Students from countries
around the world parade their flags.

Check out dance from India,
the Philippines, Fiji, Brazil, Burma and Korea. Hear a poem
from Afghanistan, a song from Tibet, a ribbon dance, a fan
dance, Asian hip hop, an umbrella dance. Witness a parade
of flags of the countries from which Smith students come.
“Most cultures in the world have at least one celebration
in which different things, like life, a new year, a deity
or joy, are honored,” comments Isabel Barrios, a member
of the ISO. “Whatever the motive is, these events bring
everyone together.” That’s the spirit behind
Rhythm Nations.
