SmitHistory
The
U.S. Naval Training School at Smith College was a naval
reserve officer training program created during World
War II and based on the Smith campus. Informally
known as WAVES (Women's Auxilary Volunteer Emergency
Service), the program prepared women for non-combat duty,
as parachute riggers, pharmacist's, instrument flying
trainers, radio dispatchers, mechanics, lab technicians,
decoders, and navigators, among other jobs. The
College turned over use of Capen House, Northrop-Gillette,
Faunce Hall (now the Campus School) and Alumnae Gymnasium,
as well as Scott Gymnasium and athletic fields, to the Navy
for training purposes. Program headquarters were located
in the Alumnae House.
