Smith Wins United Way Award

Smith College was presented with the Spirit of the Community Award by the United Way of Hampshire County (UWHC) during its campaign closing luncheon on May 9.

The award is given annually to a company or institution in recognition of exemplary leadership in their workplace campaign and in contributing to the community. Like Smith, numerous companies and schools in the Pioneer Valley conduct their own campaigns to raise funds to contribute to the United Way’s annual campaign.

Smith’s annual campaign on behalf of UWHC, which was chaired by Judy Roberge in college relations, raised more than $160,000, which represents the largest institutional contribution to the local United Way. More than 400 people in the Smith community donated.

Smith shared the award this year with Packaging Corporation of America, a packaging materials manufacturing company located on Route 5 in Northampton.

The UWHC raised more than $1.3 million this year, which it will distribute among 27 local agencies that provide essential services to those in need in the community.

As part of the award, Smith was given an artistic sculpture of a tree, which will be displayed in the office of President Christ.
