Smith Fund Charges Toward Goal

As the fiscal year winds down, The Smith Fund is revving up. Hundreds of gifts toward this year’s goal of $11.7 million will arrive during June, and much of the money will be directed to financial aid for promising students in a tightening student loan market.

Smith’s participation rate is hovering around 37 percent, and it will take nearly 3,000 new donors to raise that rate to the goal of 40 percent participation.

Classes from the 1980s have been conducting their own challenge, partly with the help of an “80 Days for the Eighties” Web drive, complete with reminiscent pictures and references to that era. And in a generous move to motivate over all support, Smith alumnae have stepped forward with substantial funds to challenge their peers in making a gift before June 30.

One part of the rush to the finish is a staff phonathon taking place today (Tuesday, June 10) from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Laura Scales house basement. Each year, advancement personnel set up a phone center with more than 30 callers, who make hundreds of asks. Staff members are invited to participate, and President Christ will join the phonathon for some calls. Games, pizza and prizes for callers will add to the fun of the event.

All this activity recognizes the critical role alumnae have always played in the academic excellence and success of Smith. That support is shown in the success of Smith’s students and their numerous honors and awards.
