How Do You Get to Smith?

More than 2,500 students traveled to Smith last week, coming from all directions, from nearly every state in the country, and several countries across the water. But how, specifically, did they get here? Some drove, some flew, others hopped buses. The Gate took an informal poll during Central Check-In to find out, exactly, How did you get to Smith? (To view the students when they first arrived on campus, click their pictures below).

Amy Sinnott ’09

Transfer student from Hudson Valley Community College
Major: psychology
House: Ziskind (yay!)
Traveled from: Clifton Park, New York (near Albany)

"I got to Smith in a Toyota family van. We traveled South on I-87 and I-787, then East on I -90 (which becomes the Mass-Pike), then 91N. The trip itself was pretty simple, but the state of the inside of the van was crazy. It was about the most stuff I have ever seen in the car, there was really only room for me, my mom (Lynn Sinnott) and my dad (Jim Sinnott) to sit...no stretching out because it just wasn't possible!"

Lillie Kilburn ’09

Transfer student from the University of Arizona
Major: English
House: Chase
Traveled from: Pennsylvania, and originally the U.K.

"I came to Smith by car, but it was pretty uneventful."

Cecelia Vayda ’10

Major: art history
House: Scales
Traveled from: Maplewood, New Jersey

"I drove myself to Smith in a white Hundai. I took 95N over the George Washington Bridge to 91N up to Northampton."

Caitlin Miller ’10

Major: biology
House: Scales
Traveled from: Youngstown, New York

"I got to Smith by car: my Mom's red Chevy ’99 pickup truck, route 90E to the Mass Pike."

Tu Nguyen ’10

Major: government, minor in Third World Development
House: Scales
Traveled from: Orange County, California

"I flew from Los Angeles International to Bradley International. My friend Cece picked me up from the airport and took the I-91 back to school (she drove a white Hyundai). I met a really nice lady in the airport while waiting to board in LAX."

Hallie Shpack ’10

Transfer student fom University of Louisville
Major: biology and Russian
House: Hubbard
Traveled from: Louisville, Kentucky

"I traveled by  car in a white Honda Civic on routes 71 to 80 to 84 to 91, I think.
I managed to lose both my driver's license and debit card during the course of the trip.

Danielle Popp ’11J

Transfer student from the University of Florida, Gainesville
Major: East Asian languages and literature; focus on Japanese
House: Wesley
Traveled from: Gainesville, Florida

"My mother and I flew into Hartford and then drove a champagne colored Hyndai rental car to Smith. I'm not sure what route we took...is there an I-9? That might have been it. At the airport, my bags were so heavy we had to move stuff around or pay extra. I also checked a TV as a piece of luggage."

Kim, Min Ji ’08

Major: government (concentration: international relations) and French studies
House: Dawes
Traveled from: Seoul, South Korea.
"I got to Smith by plane from Geneva  to New York JFK. I had a stopover in London Heathrow. From New York

I took a Greyhound shuttle. It did feel unusual to be back in the States. It took a while for me to realize I was no longer in Europe. I did JYA Geneva last year and stayed on in Switzerland to do the Blumberg Traveling Fellowship. I did research on Swiss naturalization and integration laws and how they affect young second/third-generation foreigners. I took this opportunity to travel around the country and interview politicians and random passer-by."

Irene DeLilly

Exchange student from Spelman College, Atlanta.
Major: English (minor in education)
House: Cutter
Traveled from: Los Angeles, California

"I had to take a 7-hour flight to get to Connecticut and then a 1-hour car ride in a rental to get to Smith. I do a lot of air travel so anything crazy that happens is nothing new to me. My trip to Smith was actually one of the most pleasent flights I’ve taken. I’m already really enjoying myself and have been making so many friends. The ladies at Smith are so friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food is amazing and there is so much to take advantage of at this school. Convocation was insane, but that’s what makes Smith so unique. I love it here."
