Day West
Here at Smith, the annual Mountain Day took place more than
a month ago. Out in southern California, however, Mountain
Day arrives this Saturday, Nov. 8.

The Smith College Club of Los Angeles is calling it Mountain
Day West, a daylong hike for club families at Point Mugu
State Park in Big Sycamore Canyon.
“In honor of Mountain
Day (but recognizing that leaves turn color a bit later
in Southern California than in Northampton!) we will hold
a family friendly hike, on Saturday, November 8, 2008, commencing
at 10:30 a.m.,” says a club announcement of the event.
Point Mugu State Park is located in northern Malibu on the
Pacific Coast Highway about 50 miles north of downtown Los
Angeles.
Smith College Club of
L.A. members and their families will hike 6.5 miles through
the park, a hike “for the hearty,” the
announcement warns. A 4-mile option will also be offered, “for
those who prefer a more gentle hike.”
For many here in the east,
where winter’s chill huffs
around the corner, a hike in sunny southern California on
Mountain Day West sounds perfect.
