A selection, titled Jose Diaz, from "City of Champions."

In conjunction with “City of Champions,” an exhibition of photographs in the Oresman Gallery, a panel of speakers will gather Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. in Graham Auditorium, Hillyer Hall, for a symposium titled “Rethinking Decline: New Perspectives on Massachusetts' Gateway Cities.”

“City of Champions,” on view through Saturday, Feb. 28, features photos by Mary Beth Meehan of her hometown, Brockton, Mass., and explores the personal effects of the global economic and cultural changes under way there.

Panelists for the upcoming symposium are: John Schneider, executive vice president, MassINC., and author of Reconnecting Massachusetts Gateway Cities: Lessons Learned and an Agenda for the Future; Joseph Krupczynski, professor of art and art history, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who will discuss his research and work to save the Skinner Building, in Holyoke; Paola Ferrario, Harnish Visiting Artist in the Department of Art at Smith, who will discuss the role of art and documentary photography in effecting social change; and Maria Salgado, acting director of Solutions Community Development Corporation, who will talk about her grass-roots work in the ever-changing Holyoke community.

Meehan, a former photographer for the Providence Journal, is a 2009 Photography Fellow with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.
