New Music Ensemble ICE to Perform at Smith
The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) will perform
at Smith this Saturday, Feb. 28, in a concert of works for
various instrumental combinations of flute, clarinet, guitar,
percussion and cello by composers such as Iannis Xenakis,
Kaija Saariaho, Edgar Guzman, Magnus Lindberg and Louis Andriessen.
The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Sweeney Concert
Hall, Sage. A concert talk with ensemble members on stage
will precede the concert at 7 p.m. The event is free and
open to the public.
Described recently by the New York Times as “one
of the most adventurous and accomplished groups in new music” and
by the New Yorker as “brilliant” and “a
powerhouse of new-music programming,” ICE comprises
30 versatile performers who are dedicated to advancing the
music of our time. The ensemble, founded in 2001, has rapidly
established itself as one of the leading new-music ensembles
of its generation, winning first prize in the 2005 CMA/ASCAP
Awards for Adventurous Programming, and performing more than
50 concerts a year in the U.S. and abroad. Recent engagements
include performances at the Mostly Mozart Festival of Lincoln
Center, the Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial
Center, and the opening ceremonies of the Experimental Media
and Performing Arts Center.

Visting members of the ICE will hold master classes on Sunday,
March 1, beginning at 1 p.m. in Earle Recital Hall, Sage.
The classes are free and open to the public. The schedule
is as follows:

master class with Chase and Lamb.
3 p.m. Clarinet master class with Josh Rubin.
4 p.m. Guitar master class with Dan Lippel.
