Hockey Team Says, "Love Your Body"
The Smith College field
hockey team will join the National Organization for Women
(NOW) in sponsoring the organization’s
national “Love Your Body Day,” on Wednesday,
Oct. 15. The annual event encourages self-acceptance and
self-esteem with a message of loving one’s body as
it is without giving homage to negative stereotypes.
The team plans a daylong “body image” fair
on Chaplin Lawn, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring local
massage therapists, reflexologists, yoga and Pilates instructors,
and giveaways from other businesses.
“We feel as though this mission of positive body image
is in line with that of Smith College, which strives to educate
strong women by enriching the whole person, both mind and
body,” said Katie Jones, assistant field hockey coach
and a coordinator of the event.
NOW urges women nationwide
to join in Love Your Body Day to combat harmful stereotypes
portrayed in some media and pop culture. “Women and girls are continually bombarded
with images from entertainment and advertising that help
define our culture’s beauty ideal,” says the
. “These industries can’t
use negative images to sell their products without our assistance.
Together, we can fight back.”
