is Native American Heritage Month
To honor the occasion of Native American Heritage Month,
Indigenous Smith Students and Allies (ISSA) will host several
events next week:
Lecture: “Issues Affecting Indigenous People” by
Tonya Gonnella Frichner, Esq., president and founder of the
American Indian Law Alliance.
7 p.m., Neilson Library Browsing Room
Film
Screening: Powwow Highway. Two friends,
Buddy and Filbert, leave the Indian Reservation to take a
road trip across the badlands of the American Midwest to
save Buddy’s sister from unjust imprisonment.
On the way, they encounter truth, love, magic, and healing. 6:30
p.m., Weinstein Auditorium, Wright Hall
Lecture: “Native American Identity” by Alice Nash,
assistant professor of history, University of Massachusetts
at Amherst. 6:30

Also Nov. 19, Chase Duckett
will feature a Native American Food Night to celebrate Native
American Heritage Month. The menu includes pasole-hominy
soup, seamed butternut squash, and pumpkin pie.
In related events:
Students in History 396, an independent study/seminar on
indigenous women, will presenting results of their research,
which will be donated to the Sophia Smith
Collection.
Five Colleges, Inc. offers
a certificate program in Native American Indian Studies.
Frederique Apffel-Marglin, professor emerita of anthropology,
and Neil Salisbury, Barbara Richmond 1940 Professor Emeritus
of Social Studies, are the program advisers for Smith.
