Women
Artists Gather at Smith for SWAN Day
 in
a range of genres will gather at Smith on Saturday, March
28, to present their works and discuss their lives as female
artists in celebration of SWAN (Support Women Artists Now)
Day, an international holiday on the last Saturday of Women’s
History Month.
The event, titled “In It for the Long Haul,” will
include presentations by each artist followed by a panel
discussion, moderated by Andrea Hairston, professor of theater,
who is coordinating the event. Free and open to the public,
it will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in Mendenhall Center
for the Performing Arts room 207.
Presenters are: Priscilla
K. Hellweg, artistic director of Enchanted Circle Theatre;
Lesléa Newman, novelist
and Poet Laureate of Northampton; Pan Morigan, musical director
of Chrysalis Theatre and WaterMoon Music; Ama Patterson,
poet and short story writer; and Micala Sidore, weaver.
The women will share their art through musical and theatrical
performances, poetry and short story readings, and displays
of tapestries. The presenters will then discuss their commitment
to a life of art in both good and difficult times, analyze
strategies for building a career as an artist, and share
memorable moments from their lives in the arts.

between Martha Richards, of The Fund for Women Artists, and
Jan Lisa Huttner, of Chicago's WITASWAN (Women in the Audiences
Supporting Women Artists Now).
