House Water Quickly Restored After Line Break

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Water is expected to be fully restored to two student
houses by this evening, less than 24 hours after an underground break in the waterline forced water to be temporarily shut off to the pair of residences.

Students in Gillett and Northrop houses were notified of the disruption in supply early Friday, Sept. 12, and staff from Dining Services delivered bottled water for students’ use in the morning.

The break was first noticed at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday when water began to come up from the ground outside Northrop house. Plumbers worked in conjunction with the city water department to locate the crack in the six-inch pipe.

“The crew stayed through the night and by 9 a.m. this morning had restored the domestic water supply through temporary connections to both buildings,” said Robert Lesko, associate director of facilities management. “The break was a stress crack in the cast iron waterline. The rest of that line appears to be in good condition.”

About 80 students occupy Gillett House and the same number, Northrop. Both
are located on Elm Street.
