Redmon, director of the Sophia Smith Collection (SSC), is teaming
with Women’s eNews,
an independent online news service, in celebrating “21 Trailblazers
of New York” with a luncheon in New York City on Monday,
March 29.
The event is co-sponsored by
Friends of the Smith College Libraries.
Redmon will introduce “21 New Yorkers
who made history by championing social justice and gender
equality” at the event, which will include a luncheon at
the Down Town Association on Pine Street, as well as a presentation
and reception.
“Expect to hear the often untold stories of working class, radical, lesbian and
women of color activists and feminists,” tempts the event invitation. Each year,
Women’s eNews celebrates inspirational women in history through its series “21
Leaders for the 21st Century.”
The papers and biographical
materials of each of the lauded subjects at the 21 Trailblazers
luncheon are part of the Women’s Archives in the Sophia Smith Collection.
Among the history-makers are legendary lawyer Dorothy Kenyon; gay rights advocate
Carmen Vazquez; civil rights lawyer and federal judge Constance Baker Motley;
19th-century journalist and novelist Sara Parton (Fanny Fern); and journalist,
editor and co-founder of Ms. Magazine Letty Cottin Pogrebin.
