Newsletter Receives Top CASE Award
NewsSmith,
Smith’s quarterly newsletter, recently
captured the top prize in the 2010 Circle of Excellence competition
sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE): a gold medal for “best print external
audience newsletter.”
Based in Washington, D.C., CASE
is an international association of professionals, administrators,
and editors working in academic fundraising, communications
and alumni relations. The annual publication awards recognize
outstanding achievement in higher education, independent
schools, and nonprofit organization communications across
the Northeast and in parts of eastern Canada. Judges assess
over all design, content and writing, use of photography,
graphics, and technology.
, which is distributed
to some 55,000 readers, including alumnae, was chosen from
22 entries judged in the competition for best newsletter.
It is the second CASE award NewsSmith has won under the editorship
of Jan McCoy Ebbets, assistant director of communications
in the Office of College Relations.
While the summer 2010
issue is the final print edition of NewsSmith, the award-winning
quality of the newsletter will endure. The kinds of stories
typical of the print version—about teaching
and learning, academics at Smith, and students' and faculty members’ intellectual
journeys—will soon be presented in a new section of the college's Web site, offering
a vivid and dynamic portrait of Smith’s distinctive educational experience. The
new site, featuring frequently changing content and multimedia, will launch soon.
