Smith
College Club to Operate as a Conference Center
To
address the growing demand for event space on campus, the
Smith College Club will become the Smith College Conference
Center, providing additional space to cultivate new business
from external audiences and hosting a wider range of events,
from academic conferences and workshops to larger and more
varied social events, than can be accommodated elsewhere
on campus. The conference center will have air-conditioning
installed later this summer/early fall, which is critical
for the year-round functioning of the facility.

In accordance with a proposal
developed by Judi Strzempko, director of college relations,
Peg Pitzer, director of events management, and Kathy Zieja,
director of dining services, the center will be managed by
the , with a conference center manager
hired for a two-year limited term to manage the center and
generate new business. This fall, the events management office
will be relocated to the Little House attached to the conference
center to consolidate operations and to provide additional
support for the center. A major goal of the conference center
is to attract new external events and to become a revenue-generating,
self-sustaining facility for the college.
The creation of the conference
center also provides additional employment and leadership
opportunities for students. Peg Pitzer commented, “With
the trend toward heightened interest in event planning careers,
we plan to offer opportunities for student interns to work
with the conference center staff and to gain hands-on experience
in the event field.”
Space requests for the conference
center can be made .
Faculty and staff interested in holding a conference or large
event in the center should contact Peg Pitzer (ext. 2163)
to schedule a date consultation.
